Smith to Start 38th in Atlanta

HAMPTON, Ga. (March 5, 2010) -- Regan Smith will start 38th in Sunday's Kobalt Tools 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

In Friday night's time trials, Smith's No. 78 Furniture Row Chevrolet, covered the 1.54 mile oval in 29.496 seconds at 187.958 miles per hour.

"We wanted better and expected better," said Smith. "It just wasn't a good, clean lap. It's a long race (500 miles) and we're going to be patient and march forward."

The pole winner was Dale Earnhardt Jr. (192.761 mph). Rounding out the top-five in order were: Kyle Busch, Juan Pablo Montoya, Mark Martin and Jeff Gordon.

Sunday's race will be televised on FOX, beginning with a prerace show at 10 a.m. MT.
