Smith Qualifies 31st in Sonoma
SONOMA, Calif. (June 18, 2010) -- Regan Smith will start 31st in Sunday's Sprint Cup race here at Infineon Raceway. The event -- the Toyota/SaveMart 350k -- will be the first of two scheduled road races of the season.
In Friday's time trials at the 10-turn, 1.99-mile circuit, Smith's No. 78 Furniture Row Chevrolet recorded a lap time and speed of 77.690 seconds at 92.213 miles per hour.
"We had a top-15 run going until I got a little sideways on the final two turns," said Smith, who is competing in his first road race in nearly three years. "We had a solid practice earlier in the day and we have two more (practice) sessions tomorrow to get dialed in for Sunday. It's been a while since I've driven on a road course, but I felt good about how our Furniture Row Chevrolet was able to maneuver through the corners. Road racing is a lot of fun and I look forward to Sunday's race."
The pole winner was Kasey Kahne (93.893 mph). Rounding out the top-five in order were: Jimmie Johnson, Kurt Busch, Kevin Harvick and Jeff Gordon.
Sunday's 110-lap race will be televised on TNT, beginning with a 60-minute prerace show at noon MT.
